A few photos of prayer feathers I made this month. What's a prayer feather? In a nutshell, many native american cultures believe birds to be sacred - able to fly between this world and the spirit world. The prayer feather is meant to hold a prayer or a wish and to be hung in a window (by those little fringey straps at the bottom). Then a bird will see the feather, collect the prayer, and bring it to the heavens. Wild turkey feathers, deerskin, rabbit fur, and mustang hair.

Pronghorn Rattle by Foxfeather R. Zenkova

A custom rattle for Jadewolf, who has an affinity for pronghorns. Deer rawhide/leather, pied crow feathers (which are non-native and legal), glass beads, and coyote fur. It is a round rattle with dried corn inside and has a really fantastic sound to it.

Cougar Wedding Drum by Foxfeather R. Zenkova

I just finished this commission for a wedding drum. This one was a real pleasure to work on, it reminded me how much I adore working on drums and really want to do more of them. I had the challenge to work with 'playful cougar' and 'red cedar tree' to represent the two parties involved. This drum is 12" in diameter, deer hide on a pine frame. It has a rich, wonderful tone. May 2005 A slightly customized glyph drum; 13" diameter elk hide over a stained pine frame. This is a larger image to show off some of the grain and texture of the hide, though it doesn't do justice to the actual drum itself. They are really a textile pleasure to hold and play. I was playing around with the horse silhoutte that I made for the 'Aquarelle' series that I did, and I decided to use it to make a few 'painted ponies' on drums. "Heron Dance" painted drum by Foxfeather R. Zenkova

Jan. 2005 This was a commission piece, the image is painted on a 12" octagon-shaped deer hide drum. The colors and painting are much softer and more vibrant in reality. Heron is a symbol of patience and wisdom. Heron people are generally good orators and leaders, powerful speakers and good listeners. Heron medicine teaches people that good things are worth waiting for, when to speak and when to listen.

"Healing Hooves" Drum by Foxfeather R. Zenkova

Dec. 2004 This is a custom painted drum commission for Ravynwolf. It is painted on a 12" deer hide drum. It has a really high, sweet tone to it, and it's a drum I have been holding onto for over a year, waiting to find it the right owner. The symbolism of the spiral represents a path, one with a distinct beginning and end, but many curves along the way. It is a very personal-relating symbol. The horse represents strength (standing strong but moving forward), feminine energy, empathy, and emotional wisdom. The blue and water themes are just that; a symbol of life, rejuvination, healing, power, and comfort. The real version is much more vibrant in color and detail
